Florida-based supermarket chain Publix has officially pushed its operational boundaries northward, opening a series of stores in Kentucky over the past year and a half. This strategic move into its eighth state signals fresh competition for established regional players and provides new grocery options for consumers, with plans for an even more northernly location now underway in Virginia.

The employee-owned company, known for its customer service and popular deli offerings, opened its current northernmost operational store in Walton, Kentucky, in March 2025. This follows its initial entry into the Bluegrass State in January 2024 with a Louisville location. While the Kentucky stores currently mark the front line of its expansion, Publix has confirmed it has broken ground on a new store in Winchester, Virginia, which will claim the title of the Publix northernmost location upon its completion.

The Kentucky Footprint: A Strategic Push

Publix’s entry into the Kentucky grocery market has been deliberate. The company has opened four stores so far in cities including Louisville, Lexington, and Walton. According to a company spokesperson, at least 10 additional stores are planned for the state, signaling a long-term commitment to the region.

The new Kentucky stores are substantial, typically measuring over 55,000 square feet. They feature a range of departments that Publix executives hope will differentiate the brand, including:

  • Full-service delis with a wide selection of artisan cheeses and its famous “Pub Subs.”
  • Scratch bakeries and extensive prepared food sections.
  • A “Pours” café area offering coffee, smoothies, and beer or wine for in-store consumption.
  • Adjacent Publix Liquors stores, the first time the company has opened such an attachment outside of Florida.

“We are excited to expand across the Bluegrass state,” said Publix Media Relations Manager Jared Glover in a statement earlier this year regarding the Walton opening. “We look forward to our new customers experiencing the Publix difference and being active members of this vibrant community.”

Supermarket Competition Heats Up

The expansion brings Publix into direct supermarket competition with Cincinnati-based The Kroger Co., which has long dominated the region. According to data from retail analytics firm Chain Store Guide, Kroger holds an estimated 43% of the grocery market share in the Louisville area. Walmart follows with approximately 23%.

Analysts note that Publix is not attempting to compete with Kroger or Walmart on price alone. Instead, its strategy appears to focus on service, quality, and a unique in-store experience. “I think what Publix will bring into the market, in terms of the competition, is they’re going to provide different sets of products,” Eunjee Kwon, an assistant professor of real estate at the University of Cincinnati, told Fox 19. Kwon specifically cited the popularity of the “Pub sub” as an example of a product that differentiates the chain.

This approach targets a specific segment of the market. Supermarket analyst David Livingston noted that while the move into a Kroger stronghold will be challenging, Publix’s “slow and methodical” approach will likely help it succeed. “One thing Publix does right is they do it slow and methodical,” Livingston said in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel. “They don’t just leapfrog and go into new markets.”

Broader Implications of Grocery Store Expansion

Publix’s northern push is part of a larger trend in the U.S. grocery industry, where established regional chains are increasingly expanding beyond their traditional territories to seek new growth. This “grocery war,” as some experts call it, has seen companies like Kroger expand into Florida with delivery services, while Iowa-based Hy-Vee has also announced plans for Kentucky.

For consumers, the arrival of a new major competitor like Publix can mean more choice, potentially better service as stores vie for customers, and access to new products. For Publix, the expansion is supported by a new distribution center in North Carolina, which a company spokesperson called a key enabler of its ability to “have an even further reach.”

The company has not publicly stated a timeline for the opening of the Winchester, Virginia, store, only confirming that the developer has begun work on the site. As Publix continues to invest in new markets, its careful expansion will be closely watched by competitors and consumers alike, serving as a key case study in the evolving American grocery landscape.
